server woes
Sep. 11th, 2006 07:14 pmThis is a warning, I am going to be bitchy this evening...
When your building a server and you pick out a motherboard, Tyan makes the best ones on the planet as far as technology. There are however 2 major problems with them. One is price, they are damn expensive, two is compatability.. they aren't compatable with jack shit.
I am re-building a server and ordered a Tyan motherboard. I went to install it and the powersupply from the case doesn't match the motherboard. Can't remove it as it's wielded to the case which is a 4u monster with a duel powersupply. So I had to buy an adapter, no big deal. Then I went to install the CPU's, 2 Intel duel core Xeon's... and damnit there is a spring unit which bolts onto the bottom of the motherboard that was not in the box. I call Tyan and they tell me that it's not supposed to be there and they don't know what I am talking about. I get them to look at their OWN FUCKING MANUAL in pdf form online, tell them to turn to page 3 and look at the last item on the list of things included in the box. At that point they really couldn't argue and shipped me 2 of them which arrived today. So I start working on it again. I go to install the cpu and the way they built it the cooling system has to be bolted to the bottom of the case, in other words, you need a special case.. fuck... so I went out this evening and bought parts then mod'ed the case I have so that I can bolt the CPU's to it.
Now I go to put the memory in.
I bought: DDR2 667 240pin 5300 SDRAM
it wants: DDR2 667 240pin 5300 FBDRAM
fuck... I read that thing over like 20 times before I ordered it and still got the mother fucker wrong...
so I order the new memory... 2 gig of the new stuff is just shy of $400. Then I go to RMA the old stuff... I just paid $220 for this memory but newegg adds in their handling fee, restocking fee... so I will only get back $160 if I return it.
Does anyone want to buy 2gig of DDR2 SDRAM?
it really has not been a good day
