New Software
Nov. 22nd, 2001 02:44 amStew's company is working on a project for Southern Aluminum, they have 2 Internet connections and they want a simple fail over system... simple right, just buy the hardware.. well they didn't like that idea which is fine with me because they are paying me to write software... I have already told them I would do it in shell and release it as open source when I was done... I have also set it up for portablity so that it's easy for someone else to figure out. I got it working, there are 4 interfaces to the box, turns out they have 2 internal networks to route to, they also have 15 address they are going to need to be rerouted inside the network... fine with me, add another hour to program in the function to do it.
I have added a program to make the ip's easy to test.. I have been meaning to do this for a while, it controls your routing table, interfaces and natd. it's not very useful as a user program but it's great for an administrator or programmer while testing or fixing broken shit... it also works a lot better than /etc/rc I want to shoot the person who wrote that piece of crap right after I am done strangling the one who wrote adduser.. both of those have been on my list of re-writes for a while but I haven't gotten down to doing it yet...
my sister and her new boy are going to come and stay at my house friday night Woo-Woo!! that will be fun, I will have to come up with stuff for them to eat and things to do... if all else fails I have over 500 movies, I am sure we will find something they haven't seen.
I purchased 2 8 port 10/100 switches. they were $48 each. I am tired of 10. I set them up on my network, did a ping, it worked, transfered a couple of files. that worked fine. not as fast as I thought it would be but pretty quick. then I turned on the rest of the network... BOTH of the switches went down to over 99% packet loss. I think I have a little much on my network... one was an octapus hub, the other was a c-net (I think) they have both been returned and I am on the HP and 3-com switches again. they may not be the fastest things in the world but they are damn reliable I also tried the HP-VT100 cards, there are no drives for them for linux or FreeBSD.... I am going to try netBSD later... but don't tell me that I am going to have to install HP/UX for every box I want to put on that switch... grrr... In the meantime I am putting together a router... so far I have 11 network ports on it, 9 10/100 and 2 10. does anyone have any spare duel, quad, or octal port network cards laying around they aren't using? I will trade them for parts or service ;-) due to the holidays I don't think I will get that done until this weekend... not much left to do on it however.
saw the harry potter movie... very interesting.... hmmm
I just need to have an OC3 party... SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE has to know how to configure these damn things!!
