circle of life
Jun. 5th, 2001 12:20 pmI had 2 dogs that I grew up with, one Pooca died about a year and a half ago. the other one, I just found out, died Thursday. I talked to my mother last night and she told me. she was 16 years old blind, deaf and had cancer, they had to have her put to sleep. It's a little bit strange to think about.
I am working on my laptop. for those of you who don't know I reformatted the hard drive and am doing a clean install. I got FreeBSD 4.3 running. installed bash and lftp fine. decided to see if I could get a splash screen running. I couldn't get it to work until I realized I did something really dumb, when I re-read the fetch command I wrote I realized that I had downloaded a gif and renamed it with a bmp extention.... doh!!! the bmp got downloaded and it works fine this is the one I picked out... I liked it the best here is a list of all of them. maybe once I get gimp installed I will make my own ;-)
I downloaded and installed XFree86-4 struggled with it to get it to run in 800X600 I never got it to run in 24 bit so I am going to have to put up with 16. I basicly had to force it to run like that, all it wanted to do was 640X480. I set my HorzSync to 35.1-37.9 so it wouldn't have the chance to revert back to the lower mode... it worked so screw it.
I haven't ever used xdm to run X, I always use startx with a wrapper. I decided to try it and did finally get it to work. nobody put in the instructions that you are going to have to move your .xinitrc over to .xsessions I figured it out... grrr... Window Maker is installed, and so is eterm. I don't like xterm, it doesn't pull in your /etc/profile when it runs. not only that but I get the transparent screen which is a neat effect.
I am trying to clean it up as I go, I am really bad about not doing that, after every make going back into the directory and running a make clean... it's pretty important on any computer where you aren't going to have a lot of space. (like a laptop) X-4's source is about 400 meg so you will see a big difference when you clean it up. after my cleans I went from 25% of /usr being used down to just over 10% now I have room for lots of mp3's :-D
I brought lots of toys to work for some of my co-workers to play with. one of them is in a cisco class so I brought the 2 4000's that I have for the class. maybe I will get started on those other laptops later... hmm...
