Ok so all this time I've been thinking it's a few mice terrorizing the kitchen and dishwasher. But they have been destroying the mousetraps or running off with them.

Well last night I got a few rat traps... The big ones. Well I got one of them... He was around 2.5 lbs and just the body was around 8 inches long... It's a huge fucking rat.... So now I need to get the rest of them!! There are at least 2 more...

In another life I killed one that size with a broom.

must have been quite a broom... the 2 I got last night were nowhere near that size... they were more the size it says they should be, about 18 oz

Yup, and those buggers are tenacious! It took my roomies and I 3 weeks to catch/kill all of them.

When you said your dishwasher was chewed through, I immediately thought rat. We once had a mass escape of our pet rats when we had them and since there was so many, we missed catching one of them. We figured out where he was hiding when we had a big flood in the basement after trying to use the dishwasher. And he was glad to be caught too, because he was so very thirsty.

Bye the way, my rats used to really like canned chickpeas. Might be good bait. If they are chewing through your water pipes, they are thirsty as well as hungry.

the peanut butter I'm using is working really well.

it pisses me off that they are going for the drainage pipes... I mean, there are water dishes all over the house for the animals!!

They are afraid of your animals, so they are going stealth.

Good luck with this--rats are extremely clever.

"They are afraid of your animals, so they are going stealth."

you would think that.. but the food they are taking is only a few feet away from the water bowl.

"Good luck with this--rats are extremely clever."

3 so far in 2 days... apparently I got the public school rats...

You should try tickling them and then when they are trained to follow your hand, smash them with a hammer! Heh

I have an on going battle.

Every winter they get in my attic. I really thought I had them last year. Nope. One of the traps was tripped today but didn't get him (I hope that it didn't hurt them enough to get in the insulation and dies somewhere up there)
Can't figure out where they are getting in. Only thing I can think of is they are coming up the gutters and there is a gap under the edge of the shingles where they hang into the gutter and they are getting in there.

The first time I set them out I didn't have anything.

There are two tricks I use. One is... when you set the trap make sure the trigger is set to the center, that way if it gets pushed in either direction it goes off. Before I was setting it to one side so if it got pushed that way it wouldn't set the trap off.

The other is to put the bait (in my case peanut butter) UNDER the trigger, not on top of it. The rat will have to stick his head under it to try and get to it... pushing the trigger while he is in exactly the right spot.

After doing these two things I now have 3 rats in 2 days.
