Veggie tales
Feb. 28th, 2008 06:40 amVegetarianism proves to be perversion of nature
"Vegetarians, especially those of advanced age, usually face numerous health problems that are mainly caused with the shortage of animal protein. After two months of no-meat diet, the quantity of protein in the cardiac muscle decreases four times, which triggers the development of heart failure. The work of all other organs worsens soon after. A vegetarian man or woman may find themselves on the brink of dystrophy."

Date: 2008-02-28 01:47 pm (UTC)I also like how they fail to mention the number of human cultures that have subsisted on vegetarian diets for generation upon generation. (And, no, starving African children children do not count.)
I also like how they fail to mention that most vegetarians consume eggs and dairy which, last time I checked, contain animal proteins.
And I like how their single "vegetable protein" is wheat bread. Because that's the only "vegetable" vegetarians eat, you know.
And I also like how they also fail to mention that most Americans get much more protein than their bodies can synthesize, which leads to weight gain and dehydration, and can eventually cause osteoporosis and kidney problems. (But this is forgivable, since this is a Russian site and Russians may not have the same poor diets as their American counterparts.)
The whole article is laughable.
I'm a vegan now
Date: 2008-02-28 02:02 pm (UTC)I started the Physicians Commitee for Responsible Medicine (http://www.pcrm.org/)'s diabetes diet a month ago--it is completely vegan, no added fats, extremely low glucose index because studies performed in 2006 showing that this type of diet can reduce or reverse diabetes (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/26/health/webmd/main1837927.shtml). My diet consists of legumes (limiting soy because of the high fat content--only light soy milk or tofu), grains (the only bread made with yeast I can eat is rye or pumpernickle--other types raise the blood sugar too quickly), fruits (except pineapple and watermelon, as they also tend to raise blood sugar too quickly), all veggies (except white potatoes due to blood sugar, avocados due to fat, olives due to fat). I am encouraged to eat all I want because they do not want those of us on the diet to go hungry or our metabolism will be slowed down and cooking is quite fun. We are also encouraged to exercise every day. So anyway....
I had previously lost 45 pounds under Slimfast and had gone into a 5 month plateau. I was always starving and feeling angry, probably because I was hungry and not losing weight. In the month I've been on this diet, my blood sugar has improved and I've lost 8 pounds--not too fast but it's better to go slowly. I haven't been hungry. I have been gassy, but as I get used to this diet, it's better. My skin is indeed dryer, but I just use a moisturizer. I am able to see color better at work (I work in a photo lab) so that's a good thing. I was suffering from really dry eyes and have noticed I haven't had to use eyedrops in about three weeks. I feel more energetic and don't need coffee so much. My asthma is better--probably because of less mucus-producing foods like cheese--I haven't had an attack in several weeks but it isn't allergy season yet so who knows?
I'm not saying that a vegan diet is for everybody. I love animals and want food animals treated humanely, but I am not going to say that vegetarianism is for everyone. Some people have very sensitive tastes for certain flavors and I really do think some people need more protein than others.
