I had a good night [livejournal.com profile] melonaise took me to the symphony... Over all it was good, it's been a long time since I have done something like that. There were 4 soloist 2 sopranos a tenor and a baritone, one of the sopranos was incredible I was very impressed at her voice. the others were good but she was SO good the others only sounded mediocre by comparison.

The strings sounded nice.. some of the best I heard... there were around 10 violinist (one of them actually played a violettia, shh don't tell him) and 4 violaists they overpowered most of the other instruments.. I really like listening to the bassists they were wonderful!! the wind section was small but good, 2 oboes and 2 bassoons .. one of the oboe players kept banging her oboe on her leg... then she cleaned it twice on stage... I have never known anyone to spit THAT much!! the brass section was horrid!! the only part of the show I was really displeased with. One of the trombone player's instrument was about 1/2 the size it should be..... I haven't ever seen that on a trombone... strange.

the Chorus was great, she had a friend who was singing but we were in the nose-bleed section and couldn't make out one person from another so I narrowed it down to about 5 people. I am pretty sure she was three rows up and second from the right (my right) but I am not sure.. next time I go I am going to bring my binoculars. we were 2ed row from the last (last row was empty).

something strange in the program... under the list of instruments was a libriarian not sure what that is.. did they just spell librarian wrong, and if so why was it listed as an instrument? there are 2 people listed playing it... one of them was also a violinist the other one was listed as 'The Ann H. Rice Chair'. Did he name his chair or something? if so why didn't anyone else name their chairs? am I going crazy or is this strange...

I had a great time, Thank you melon!!

I have never known anyone to spit THAT much!!

Oh god...i had a terrible time with oboe spit back in the day. Everytime I played I'd have a spit spot on my knee or on the floor. It just drains right throught the instrument...
With my sax there are somedays I have to empty it over the sink due to excessive amounts of spit.
I don't think a lot of people have this problem, I think I'm just one of those super spit producers...

yea, but to bang the instrument on your knee at ever break then to have to clean it twice on stage during a concert? that is a little bit much...

I thought you moved the pieces in and out to tune it.. that kind of fucks up your tuning to take it apart doesn't it? you would have to retune it and you can't do that in the middle of a song.

Not so much with the oboe. You just shove the pieces together and do the tuning with the reed/mouthpiece. It's likely they have marked the reed to know where the correct tuning is, or they have incredible embouchre control...the first being the more likely case.

Thanks SO much for coming! :) I'm REALLY glad you enjoyed it.

I was in the second row, second from the left. ;) You guys were WAAAAY up there.

"Librarian" was grossly misspelled. The orchestra librarian is in charge of the upkeep of the music library -- before rehearsal, they have to pull the music to be rehearsed, make sure the right instruments have the right parts... that sort of thing. The librarian isn't always a member of the orchestra, but in this case it was.

The whole "chair" thing... it isn't an actual chair that bears the name, it's just the position in the orchestra. The Rice lady was probably someone who was a violinist or loved violin music and donated a LOT of money to the orchestra. Since it was obviously a specific interest of hers, they named the particular position after the benefactor.

The three trombones were all different sizes. The littlest one (an alto trombone) isn't seen very often.

The brass WAS awful. :P If you were watching the oboeist empty her spit, you missed the French horns. There was a PUDDLE next to one of them.

And I liked the strings, too... I'm impressed you recognized the violetta! :D I think they could have used another viola and another cello, but this is the instrumentation that was called for, so... oh well.

That one soprano was, in my opinion, worth the price of admission to come see. Especially her last solo... (I personally hated the other soprano [the white lady] and didn't think she could sing very well. I just don't care for that kind of voice.)

"I was in the second row, second from the left. ;) You guys were WAAAAY up there."

we actually made looking for you into a game.. we couldn't really see anything really well anyway.

"\"Librarian\" was grossly misspelled."

ok, I was worried, I thought there was some instrument I hadn't heard of... I feel better now... I still it would be cute if he would name his chair and put it in the book ;-) something like "phil - my chair"

"The three trombones were all different sizes. The littlest one (an alto trombone) isn't seen very often."

I decided to be nice and not make a comment about the trombonist who was given the alto trombone...and the ones who were given the large ones... I must say it did look a little funny...

"If you were watching the oboeist empty her spit, you missed the French horns. There was a PUDDLE next to one of them."

hehe, we were so far up you are lucky I knew it was an oboe :-P

"I'm impressed you recognized the violetta!"

I am impressed that I could see it... the little brown dot was smaller than the other little brown dots... and a darker shade of brown.

"That one soprano was, in my opinion, worth the price of admission to come see."

yea, she was good, she did some things with her voice that I have NEVER been able to do, even when I could sing. I don't think the mezzo soprano was bad... she was just SO shadowed by the other she looked that way.

I had a wonderful time, thank you for the invite. let me know when you are singing again!!

Could you see us? We were right underneath an accent light, and I tried to signal you with our golden program books once. ;) I think second row, second from the left was one of our options for who you were. ;) At least some of the candidates got ruled out when he made the two choruses identify each other.

Yes, I could see you! For some reason, I wasn't completely blinded by the stage lights. In fact, of the six people who came to see me that night, you two were the only ones I spotted in the audience. ;)
