*SOLD*

I sold everything living in my salt water tank... I just can't afford to keep it up. it is becoming a fresh water tank and I am going to put the angels in it and see if they will breed. I also think I am going to put a lot more live plants in it, as well as some fish I plan on catching in the stream by the house.

looks like I may need a new programmer for the game, anyone know C++ REALLY well?

I installed windows 2000 on a box so that I can learn 3D graphics creation. I HATE it... I have to reboot this shit more than windows 98. I did the install then all of the updates, (took 6 fucking hours total) and all I am running is maya and 3D studio max.

someone asked me why I hate windows, I was working with 2K at the time, in the last 15 minutes?

1. I save a file as aw1.hld I want it to be named aw1.hld not aw1.hld.txt
2. when I copy over a file I want to copy over it, not create a new file called "copy of filename"
3. I want to run doskey so that I can use my arrows to go through my history
4. I want a boot file that I can configure
5. I want a command line in my menu by default
6. I don't want it telling me what it thinks needs to be in my menu and me having to click a button to see everything else
7. I don't want it hiding files from me because they end in ini
8. I want to change the way I view my window without going through a 20 window "easy wizard"

Those are the things that annoyed me in 15 minutes of using the operating system, if I were to make a full list I am sure it would be many pages.

how do people live with windows on their computer? I don't understand it!! do you just not understand how much better it is to use a real operating system?

grrr, my gripe for the day.

I am going to code a bit more tonight, then more 3D study, few more pages of "lord of the rings" then bed

Geez, I wish I wasn't a dummy, so I could learn linux or whatever it is that runs so much more smoothly. I can't even get Windows 98 to defrag.

That is very simple. People that run Windows do it for the simplicity of it. 85% of the people us win* because thy only use their pc do check e-mail......and maybe a letter in word or excel for some use or another. They are not trying to utilize the pc as you are......that....and they still have the market cornered.....but that is starting to change....

And there's one other major reason that a lot of people use Windoze...myself included.

Games.

Pure and simple. All the best games are only available for Windoze OS's.

Every one of those "features" of Windows that you mentioned can be turned off. I've been using and supporting Windows so long that some would dub me a "power user" (or some such crap).

At home I've got both a Windows XP (which is equally annoying at first, but again the "features" can be turned off) and a FreeBSD box.

Windows is necessary for certain things. I need my gaming fix *cough*Neverwinter Nights*cough* (yay, the Atari fuji lives on!) It also is really easy to get it to network with other Windows machines (like the laptops my friends bring over and hook up to my LAN). *shrug* The more operating systems the better.

ok... how

especially number 4, how do you make the system registry a readable manageable file, I am not talking about regedit, where applications can be easily hidden by changing the name of what they are called in task manager to what the name of the executable is. and making it so that files boot from 3000 different places. I mean an editable file where I can go in and see what launches on boot then turn them on or off.

most of these I have changed, there is a command line in my menu now, files aren't hidden because of their extention. however I still get wizards poping up when I try to do things. I want all wizards turned off and I see no easy way of doing that.

The doskey thing is still annoying, I think however it's my setup, the windows box doesn't have a keyboard connected to it, I use x2vnc and run vnc server on the win2K box.

files still name themselves with the extentions that they want and if I try to change an extention it gives me an error saying I shouldn't do that. same when I try to go into the winnt directory, I have to click on "show files"

lets face it, the only thing windows is really good for is games.

Well, there are several different places where things start at system boot. First, the two cattegories of things are Services and Programs. You can view, modify, start, and stop all the Services on your system from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services.

Then, all the programs started at boot time are in a registry key:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Oh, and of course the Startup folder in your Programs menu. (But that's the obvious one).

And you should be able to get command history using the arrow keys... use cmd.exe as the command interpreter. The version of command.exe provided with Windows 2000 is just there for compatibility with very old DOS programs. If cmd.exe doesn't give you that functionality, then I'd be surprised.

trying to get sound to work. aparently the sound drivers program says it runs under 2000 but doesn't

I have to go through the "Update device wizard" to install the drivers

you were saying something about you know how to get rid of all the wizards?

Drivers can be a real pain. Mostly with wizards you just have to hit the cancel button. If the sound card is autosensed, you can manually install a driver by going to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager.
