ok, so I went to go get my emissions test today.. I have always thought this was fucking stupid but whatever

I failed it.. you wanna know why? you wanna fucking know why? because my check engine light is burned out.

no, I'm not kidding, I am destroying the enviroment because I have a bunred out bulb on my dashboard.. they wouldn't even giv eme the rest of the emissions test...

Fuck you anyone who thinks that this emissions testing thing is a 'good idea' and not a 'currupt way to create jobs that aren't needed' and 'just another way to steal my money'

funny....your more liberal than most people I know....well....maybe not so much. Actually.....I have always thought emissions testing was bogus anyway. Yes....there are more cars on the road than semi-trucks....but have you ever seen how much black smoke they blow out at least two of their gigantic smokestacks. Hello...they burn diesel....do you how less that is refined, or refined differently I might say.....are they tested? No.

I see these trucks and older cars just belch out toxic fumes. If I'm on the sidewalk, I can't breathe.
Of course cars olders than, what is it, twenty years are exempt from being tested (at least in Georgia it was)
But with all the automotive advancements that have been made, don't you think that it's the *older* cars that need to be tested?

First of all, why did you tell them? They arent allowed to do the inspection unless the check engine light is off (which you dont know if the bulb is burned out) but the only way theyd know is if they asked you and you told them. 1. Why the hell would they ask you if the bulb is burned out, and 2. why didnt you just lie?

And not doing the test is not failing. You only fail the test if theres something wroing with your actual emissions or your gas cap.

The law has already changed to phase out sulfur based diesel (just like lead gasoline, the sulfur is a lubricant that is no longer needed in modern engines). Alas, the diesel truck lobby is pretty strong, and thus works to push the deadline out.

Refined diesel has very few pollutants or fumes. It's good stuff, and is used in Europe to some success in reducing emissions.

(the reason older cars aren't tested is to avoid a financial burden to the owner to get them up to standards..... stupid, ain't it?)

Why? the cars inspected add less than 2% to the polution problem.. the big problems are trucks... (see later post on this) and companies...

but stronger restrictions on those? NO!! there is more MONEY in charging the consumer... the emissions test are there to make money NOT to control air polution... it's hiding behind 'oh this is to help with the enviroment' which is bullshit.

and as far as paying for it? someone has to pay for it.. if it's paid for by the governemnt not only am I still paying for it but you are forcing people who don't have a car to pay for it as well.. that's not right at all!!

the entire 'emissions inspection' is bullshit.. plain and simple...

have you ever noticed that all the stats which are FOR emissions inspections only talk about the number of cars.. NOT the quaility of air... you know why? because it HASN'T HELPED.. AT ALL!! the quality of air has not changed since the inspections started.... go look for your self, try to find a study of air quality before and after the emissions inspections...

you can't pass a law that restricts something built before the law was past... same reason you can't deny the 8 americans legally allowed to smoke pot the right to smoke pot...

Georgia doesn't have an annual inspection. The only thing required to renew registration is to pass the emmissions test if the vehicle requires it (age of vehicle, etc).
In NY, they do a huge inspection (brakes, wipers, headlights, taillights, etc). In Georgia, you could say that it is the annual inspection...the only thing inspected is the emmissions level.

See, I live in North Carolina, and you have to have an annual inspection, but this is the first i've heard about "emissions tests", and in order to have a license you HAVE to have insurance as well (which I have heard maybe only 2 other states do that)

Liberals are generally more interested in busting pollution created by corporations rather than hurting the poor folks who can't afford a nice, new car. But, of course, corporations don't want to stop polluting, so it will never happen unless the nation gets a whole lot less conservative.

Well, the theory is that if you have a failure in your emissions control system, then it will be reflected by your Check Engine light. So, having a burnt-out light means that you could have an ECS failure and be unaware of it.

Having grown up in upstate NY, I am very familiar with yearly inspections. I am not sure about the insurance rates compared to that of other states, but no one seems to think that my rates are all that unusual so I would believe they are comparable. When I lived in Virginia Beach (for only a year), they didn't require you to get insurance, because if you didn't have it when you went to register, they sold you the state version so everyone had insurance. Georgia does require that you have liability insurance at time of renewal of your registration.

well when I said "cars" I was speaking of all vehicles.
But you're right. As soon as I posted this I thought of the tax payer.
The government goes about things the long and hard way as it's wont to do and puts the burden on the working man.
But hell, you can't argue against the fact that air quality has gone down a lot.
Maybe it's not just combustuble engines maybe it's not just second hand smoking.
But when the newsbroadcast has an alert about the air for people who just want to freaking jog outside, somethings fucking wrong!
Dana Reeve died of lung cancer "cause unknown" screw that! I know what the freakin' cause was: the bloody fucking Los Angeles smog is probably the culprit!

Eh, I can sort of see it failing over that, believe it or not. It is part of your emission system. It shouldn't be expensive to fix, so try not to sweat it. It needs to be in good working order anyway as it is an important indicator of the state of your engine.

I have failed over a gas cap, myself.

No no, I'm sorry you misunderstood me, my fault: I was on a rant and not being thourough with my thoughts.
I'll agree that having mandatory emission testing obviously ain't helping.
In my over 20 years of living in Atlanta, I can tell the difference from 5th grade years to before I left.
You're right, you're right: emissions inspection ain't doin' squat.
So begin second rant:
So perhaps maybe they should concentrate the people in the JOB PROGRAM into helping to refine the alternative sources of fuel that have been in development since the 70's, but subdued, since "god forbid" the shareholders of the Big Oil companies might lose some money to a compeditive source.
I think that's what I ment by the comment of "weening ourselves off of oil", because these products are by no means infinate and I'm getting sick and tired of the fights to keep things clean, our parks preserved and our young out of war.
Oh and even though I know you'll hate him you should give a listen to Jello Biafra's spoken word, he's got this one bit called "Die for oil sucker!" and the scariest thing about it is that it echos from the Gulf War what has been happening these past few years...Like father like son.

Er... I really doubt emissions inspections are intended as a job program. It doesn't really supply that many jobs, when it comes down to it.

Cleaning up pollution on the side of the highway? Sure, that's a job program. Constructing parks? I'd call that a job program, too.

But emissions inspections? That's just not job program material, if you ask me.
