Grocery stores don't have fresh spinach anymore... people are so fucking stupid...

If you normally buy fresh spinach and are not because of this 'ecoli' scare than you are an idiot.. I'm sorry... you are part of what's wrong with this country. The news tells you to be scared of something and you do it, jump through a fucking hoop without checking it... you believe anything those fucks say because it's spoon fed to you and you don't know how to fucking think for yourself...

how many people have actually been killed by this... well it was a major news story, they pulled it out of all the stores... wow, that's quite an impact... must be thousands of people! no... hundreds? um... no... tens? wrong again... you want to know how many?

THREE!!!

two were old ladies and one was a 2 year old boy...

the news reported 200 sick from ecoli... you want to know how many were confirmed sick as a direct result of the spinach? 15... and 'sick' constitutes as having a tummy ache for an hour...

yeah, you have a better chance of being struck by lightening inside on a clear day.

want to know a little bit more?

it's only bagged spinach, the actual fresh spinach (the stuff I buy) is fine
it's only from one company - Nunes Co. Inc. (which owns the 'foxy' vegetable label) and the grower Natural Selection Foods
it was all from the same farm
the ecoli came from the irrigation water, NOT the plant

if you WASH and COOK the spinach properly you will not be effected

but does this country actually take the time to find this out? no, they just take it in the ass sideways from the news stations and now I can't fucking by fresh spinach any more. One of the most nutritious things you can eat.

fucking bastards... why are people so fucking stupid....

Washing won't get rid of contamination that happens after the stems are cut. The stems act just like flower stems once they hit the water and soak up the nasties. A lot of people eat spinach raw.

Not that I think the fear-mongering by the news is really at all justified but I do think that there are some safety issues that need to be addressed with these massive produce operations. Just another reason to put more thought into eating locally when possible. :)

this was the spinich leaf tips in the bag... not the good stuff... I buy the spinach that hasn't been cut AT ALL. With the roots and dirt still on them.

I do miss spinach. I'm substituting with broccoli, but it's just not the same.

I think we should have a car scare. Oh my God! People die every single day from car wrecks! We must recall them! (I'm only being partially sarcastic. Cars are exceptionally dangerous and should probably not be in the hands of your average citizen.)

not the same at all

get on that car thing... you can do it, I would vote for it!

I think that when anyone dies from a vegetable, it should be big news, even if it's just a few people.

I was always under the impression that as quickly as Americans panic, we just as quickly forget. Maybe I judged incorrectly - I figured the spinach would be back my now.
I always crave what I can't have.

they won't forget it as long as the media doesn't want them to... it's a sad reality...

yes i know, and I am SOOOO missing my spinach, and you can't fucking get it ANYWHERE!
Although cooked spinach is nasty, much tastier and healthier when raw. :)

While I agree with you that the country went into panic mode over the E.coli/spincach incident and caused an unnecessary loss of business, productivity and common sense, E.coli is nothing that one should take lightly. I don't think that the number of people ill were exaggerated in the sense that if your psains were traced back to food contaminated by this E.coli outbreak, then, yes, you should be counted. It is the public's fault if it wants to think that all 200 people were on ventilators and dialysis or whatnot. Anyone who has had food poisoning will tell you that even a little is no fun at all and wouldn't want to be discounted because they weren't in enough pain.

But really, one of the tragedies of the whole incident is how much produce was lost due to mass panic and fear of litigation. by the time the E.coli contamination was discovered and the news was publicized, the contaminated spinach had been pulled from the shelves. Also, the contaminated spinach was never sent to GA.; in fact, it was only sent to approx. 25 states.

Lastly, let's not forget to differentiate between the 'good' E.coli that we want in our gut and this 'bad' or pathogenic E.coli that will effing kill you if given the chance and proper conditions (more likely some awful bacteria and a worn out set of kidneys and large intestine). Read an article on diarrheagenic E. coli strains (http://cmr.asm.org/cgi/content/full/11/1/142#SEC0) to learn more.
