ok, so I found this fun little services tab... hehe... I stopped almost everything...

things still running:
DHCP Client
Event Log
Plug and Play
Security Accounts Manager
VNC Server
Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions
Workstation

that is it...

all of my programs work, and I can still get on the Internet. I get an annoying message saying "at least one service did not start" when I reboot I will have to find a way to get rid of that. and now when I go to a service, right click on it and click properties it doesn't open the box it's supposed to. as a matter of fact nothing happens. so I go to close it and it says "you can not close this window with property screens still open." however there ARN'T any open, they wouldn't open. (other wise there are a couple more services I would kill)

and it takes a while to log in now... but it boots faster :-D

also when I go into the control panel... instead of there being an image on the left in a small colum and the icons being on the right. the icons are on the left in the small colum and there is nothing on the right... weird...

oh well. as long as the browser works and I can use my 3D programs.

(I am still considering going back to 98 however)

if you look in the event viewer under control panel > administrative tools > computer management you will find out where the hang and "one device driver did not start..." things originate from. usually the hang is a 30 second wins client/server init problem or IIS5 Windows Media server init problem. another possibility is your hard drive being misrepresented as a scsi device(happens when you use a highpoint technologies ide/raid controller)

hope this helps.

Another tip or two... In computer management, make a seperate Administrator account with admin privs.(makes life easier later if some script kiddies compromise your box.)

also, localize your temp directories to one location Ie: c:\Temp in Environment Variables(r-click my computer > properties > advanced) and while your at that pane you can simplify the existance of system wide memory dumps by going to startup and recovery and changing complete memory dump to kernel, or small. also on the same pane one level up from that menu is performance options, by default windows creates a swapfile 1.5x the size of your physical ram and sets performace for background services. for what your doing i think you should check applications instead of background services and play around with the swap file, just dont disable it, windows will not boot and there will be no way to repair that short of a repair disk(dont bother)

and one final tip. Make a hardware profile backup(2k adv server forgets devices every now and then apon reboot) that pane can be reached by: r-click my computer > properties > hardware > hardware profiles. just make a copy when you finalize changes in your hardware.

If you get bored one day, ill come by and iviserate windows further.

Have a good day:
